4N Consulate at MoMA PS1

4N Consulate is an interactive exhibition that debuted at Printed Matter’s 2025 New York Art Book Fair, at MoMA PS1, from September 11–14.

4N Consulate realizes an alternate reality where all travelers are afforded the same credentials, but only after enduring a bureaucratic process designed with the US immigration system in mind. In this interactive space, visitors had the opportunity to view artwork by 4N artists Susana Gomez and Angel Tianying Yu, and purchase a personalized 4N “travel document.”

Consulate agents and past 4N contributors Sherly Fan and Oliver Yuan facilitated the administrative process for those seeking a travel document. With the roll of a 12-sided jumbo dice, some lucky visitors were deemed “extraordinary”—the same designation that USCIS requires for creatives to obtain O1 visas and green cards. Because Americans don’t typically experience the exhausting, over-complicated process of obtaining travel visas or visiting foreign consulates, 4N aims to raise awareness for the experiences of foreigners in the US and the seemingly arbitrary outcomes of these processes, no matter the effort put forth.

The “travel document,” designed by Special Special art director Panny Chayapumh, is a collectable passport-like booklet including artwork by 4N artists Mengru Zhou, Yanbin Zhao, Yuyang Cara Cai, Anh Lê, Susana Gomez, Ally Yanxiu Luo, Xinyi Yang, Renee Yu Jin, Vyolet Jin, and Jiayi Li.
